HDR Photo Development On Linux Part 2

If you have not read Part 1 Please do so before continuing.

[singlepic id=203 w=320 h=240 float=right]Yesterday we left you in the middle of preparing your HDR File and as a matter of fact you should have gone through the alignment process which can take some time to complete.  Let’s take a look at this second page of the wizard.  There are options for the HDR creation in and of itself.  Typically the default works for me and I have yet to fully play and explore the options on this page it may be something to experiment with in the future but for now let’s leave it at the default profile 1 and click ‘Finish’.

[singlepic id=204 w=320 h=240 float=right]When finished creating the HDR file you will be back at the start page of Qtpfsgui with a view of your newly created HDR file.  If you are happy with the HDR file then we will save it using the ‘Save HDR As’ Button.  I would like to point out that I have had images look bright or dark and was able to work them just fine through the rest of the process.  For your fist attempt let’s leave it at the defaults perform the save it so that it can be brought back up later if desired to compare different options in the creation process and their effect.  If your image does not fit in the window make certain the window is the active one and press ‘W’ on your keyboard.  This will shrink it to fit the window.  When you are ready to continue hit the Tonemap The HDR button.

[singlepic id=178 w=320 h=240 float=right] [singlepic id=181 w=320 h=240 float=right]You should see the ‘Tone Mapping’ window to the right.  If the left side panel is not showing click on the leftmost button ‘Tone Mapping Panel’.  The default Operator Reinhard ’02 and Reinhard ’05 seem to be very effective when the overall result desired is more smooth.  For aggressive detail and harsh contrast I usually use Mantiuk.  Let’s look at some other options other than the ever important operator.  The value sliders for effect of the operator will change depending on the operator you have selected.  For example the default Reinhard has Key Value, Phi and others that are not there in Mantuik.  Adjusting these sliders will have an effect on your image I suggest making one change at a time to see the effect before trying to make multiple changes at once.  At the bottom of the panel is the Process section which gives you a result size and Apply button.  This will allow you to render the result quickly at a smaller size to sample the results prior to going full size.  After you have made your operator adjustments and selected what you feel to be a decent size Click on ‘Apply’ or press CTRL-A.

[singlepic id=183 w=320 h=240 float=right] Once you find the right one or two setups that you like the best it’s time to go full scale.  Increase the size to the maximum and hit Apply.  It will be apparent why you don’t want to do this while you look for that perfect setup on the settings.  This will take a while to render and the larger the source images the longer it will take.  Be patient and let it run, once complete you can save the render by clicking on the Save As button.  Alternatively if you have multiple results you want to save you can use the save all.  I do want to note that you can adjust the levels here prior to saving or perform that function in Gimp.  As Gimp is my final development step by choice I prefer to pull the final result into Gimp to complete the process.

The next and final Part to this process is coming in a few minutes and that is how to perform the final adjustments in Gimp.  Just as a quick recap, at this point you should be able to create an HDR file and some sort of tone mapped image.
